WAEC is an abbreviation for West African Examinations Council is a non-profit organization headquartered in Accra, Ghana. It was founded in 1952 following the adoption of the West African Examinations Council Ordinances by the governments of Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast), Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia in 1951.
What is WAEC?
The West African Examinations Council is a law-enforced examination board tasked with determining the examinations required in the public interest in English-speaking West African countries, conducting the examinations, and awarding certificates comparable to those issued by comparable examining authorities internationally.
WAEC Structure
The structure of the council is divided into three major parts: International committees, National Committees, and Subcommittees.
- International Committee treat matters affecting all member countries and also harmonizes national views pertaining to policies of the council as a whole.
- National committees handle matters relating to specific member countries and articulates national views on issues affecting the policy of the council as a whole.
- Subcommittees work on various aspects of the council’s activities.
WAEC EXAMS
The council conducts four different categories of WAEC examinations. They are International Examinations, National Examinations, Examinations conducted in collaboration with other examining bodies, and Examinations conducted on behalf of other examining bodies.
The International exams
These exams are taken in the five countries with the WAEC ordinance. It consists of: WASSCE (West African Senior School Certificate Examination):
- WASSCE FOR PRIVATE CANDIDATES (FIRST SERIES) JANUARY–FEBRUARY
- WASSCE FOR (SCHOOL CANDIDATES) MARCH – MAY
- WASSCE FOR PRIVATE CANDIDATES (MAIN GCE) SEPTEMBER–OCTOBER
The National examinations
These exams are taken in individual countries. They include:
- the Junior Secondary School Certificate for Nigeria and the Gambia,
- Junior and Senior High School Certificate Examinations for Liberia,
- National Primary School and Basic Education Certificate Examinations for Sierra Leone,
- Basic Education Certificate Examinations for Ghana, and
- Senior School Certificate Examinations for Ghana.
The Collaboration Examinations
The council also coordinates examinations in collaboration with some trustworthy examination bodies. These include:
- City and Guilds of London Institute
- Royal Society of Arts
- WAEC Research Institute
Examinations Conducted on behalf of other bodies
The council also conducts examinations in West Africa on behalf of international examination bodies. These include:
- University of London GCE
- Scholastic Aptitude Test and Graduate Record Examinations for Educational Testing Service, Princeton, USA, and
- JAMB (Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board) examination in countries outside Nigeria.
Candidates who take part in the Examinations receive authentic and reputable certifications from the council. Furthermore, the standard of these certifications is comparable to that of the United Kingdom. This is because the WAEC Ordinance gave the council the authority to conduct examinations and give certificates, as long as the certificates were of a comparable standard to those issued by examining authorities in the United Kingdom.

How can I check my WAEC result?
How to check your WASSCE result
- Visit the result checking portal for your country. [WAEC Checker Portals]
- Enter your Index Number.
- Select the Type of Examination (e.g. WASSCE).
- Enter the 12-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) on your Voucher eg. 012345678912.
How can I get WAEC certificate?
So, if you have an internal exam, please go to your school to pick it up. If you are a private candidate, you must contact the nearest WAEC office and inquire. Just keep in mind that if it’s been more than a year since your certificate was issued, you’ll have to pay a charge to get it.
What is the pass mark for WASSCE?
To pass the WASSCE, you must get an A1-E8 on your WAEC WASSCE exams. A minimum score of 75 percent on the Exam is required to get an A1. You must Score a total score of at least 40% on both portions of the exam.
Is it possible to change my WAEC date of birth?
Don’t worry if you wish to change your name and date of birth at the same time. You simply need to make a single payment. An Application Letter: You must write an official letter to WAEC requesting a name or date of birth change (as the case may be). Keep in mind that it must be a formal letter; else, your application will be refused.
