National Identity Card (“Ghana Card”) has recently turned out to be a major digital Identification system for Ghanaians. This forms part of National Identification Authority (NIA’s) measures to ensure the security and national identification of citizens in Ghana.
The Ghana Card Registration
The Ghana card registration for all Ghanaians started in the year 2017. On September 15, 2017, the National Identification Authority (NIA) conducted a liveness test of the National Identity Card (“Ghana Card”) issuance procedure and registration process as part of the redesigned National Identification System (NIS) Project Roll-Out. In October 2017, Akufo Addo was the first to acquire a card, followed by other Ghanaian authorities.
On Monday, June 4, 2018, the second phase of the NIS Project’s roll-out began, which included registration and card issuance for Ghanaians.

Registration of Ghana Card
ELIGIBILITY
Only homes with a minimum of five (5) Ghanaian applicants are eligible to participate in the Household Registration and Card Issuance Exercise.
Only Ghanaians aged 15 and up are eligible to participate.
Requirements
- The applicant’s birth certificate or valid passport, or one of the applicant’s relatives with a Ghana Card to vouch for the applicant, or
- two non-relatives who know the applicant is a Ghanaian and have Ghana Cards to vouch for the applicant; and
- the applicant’s Ghana Post Digital Address of residence.
- any government-issued identity cards or document (Driver’s Licence, Voter ID Card, SSNIT Biometric Card, National Health Insurance Card, Taxpayer Identification Number: TIN)
NB: For the vouching for process, the following categories of persons are the only ones mandated to vouch for an applicant where the applicant has no known relatives who possess a Ghana Card:
- A practising or retired professional teacher (including principals, head masters & head teachers)
- A Gazetted Chief
- A practicing or retired Magistrate or Judge
- A practicing or retired licenced Professional e.g. doctor, nurse, lawyer, accountant, engineer, architect etc.
- A serving or retired civil/public servant
- A serving or retired Clergyman
- An Imam
- A serving or retired Catechist
- A serving or retired member of the security services including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Prison Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service, BNI, Customs, Excise and Preventive Service of the Ghana Revenue Service and National Security
- A current or past Member of Parliament, An Assembly or Unit Committee
Payment
According to the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Instrument, 2019, you will be asked to pay Ghc150.00 in advance for each member of your household that you desire for NIA to register.
How to register for Ghana Card
1. Download and fill out the Registration Application Form (Household) [Download Link]
2. Purchase a scratch card called the FIMS scratch card at NIA Premium Lounge Centre or any CAL Bank branch.
3. Submit the form and FIMS scratch to NIA Head Office or via mobileregistration@nia.gov.gh
4. An NIA Data Entry personnel verifies and validates data captured and instantly a Non-citizen Ghana card is issued.

Ghana Card as Payment for Public Sector worker
Employees in the public sector who do not have a Ghana Card will not be paid starting December 1st, according to the Controller and Accountant General. This means all public sector workers must have registered for Ghana Card.
Re-registration of SIM cards deadline
The Ghana Card can now be liked directly to your personal sim card, measures taken by NIA due to several reasons. All previously registered sim cards will have to be re-registered.
The process of re-registering SIM cards began in October and will end on March 31, 2022. Sim cards can be registered by Ghanaians above the age of 15 until March 31, 2022.
